The magistrates have given the all clear for the funerals of Arthur
Kenneth Slye. The procedures for the return to Ireland of the body
of the young Irishman who was killed in a car crash last week began
yesterday.
He will leave for Dublin, where his parents, 3 sisters and many
nephews live in order to be cremated. He will travel by sea , accompanied
by his partner Fiona, with whom he'd been living for almost a year
in Via Cinque Martiri N°10, Carezzano.
Arthur had many friends. The other evening they all met on a hilltop,
in the fields over the coop Valli Unite in Costa Vescovato. Sitting
there in the grass with the wind blowing strong, they remembered
him with a celtic wake.
They hoisted the pirate flag, because Arthur loved to call himself
a pirate. "Here there are many freshwater Pirates, I am the
only true Pirate of the Seas".
He knew spanish well, and had taught many in the village, including
the old men who always saluted him with a "hasta la vista,
Arturo".
He had met Fiona in a Dublin club. She too, reddish blonde and
blue eyed, is Irish. "He came into my life like a ray of sunlight,
and has left it in the same manner".
Andrea (this is Caui!! Translator's note) holds Fiona's hand, before
beginning to talk " I met Arthur on a boat in Venice, at th
eFesta del Redentore. In June we were meant to go to Galway together.
I like playing music a lot, and he played both the guitar and the
piano. He'd told me "In Galway there's lots of people like
us, who plays music and knows how to have fun. You'll see that you'll
love it". He was just like that, ready to share feelings with
everyone, and make his life up everyday as he went along. Now I
will go to Galway alone, or maybe, with Fiona." In Ireland,
in Waterford,
Arthur had taught windsurfing and sailing. In Carezzano he'd made
himself immediately at home, really quickly and well. He shared
with his friends his passion for seventies rock.
On Sunday, on the hilltop, the wind blew strong. Fiona and Andrea
"Arthur loved the wind, and he was really tied to celtic ways..we're
sure he is with us right now..and that this is the salute he would
have wanted". It isn't the first time infact that this bunch
of young people who know how to appreciate the spirit of nature
meet in the fields: "We used to go horse riding – Belmont,
was his favorite. Long rides out, galloping, laughing , telling
each other bits of our lives".
At the top of the hill on Sunday , a board has been put up. On
it, some of the best pictures of the young Irishman. Below it, a
huge plant of big yellow daisies and some snap dragons picked from
the orchard. The fire burned long and bright, until the moonshine
took away the memories.
The Irishman Arthur Kenneth Slye was 28 years old. He'd been living
in Carezzano since 2003.
